Aztec Woodfired Oven Kitset
The Aztec kitset comes with all the components you need to build your own woodfired pizza oven. We provide the following components:
- Refractory inner shell
- Oven door
- Sand/Pumice outer shell
- Temperature gauge
- Mantle
- Fire Poker
- Base section
- Paddle
- Ceramic Fibre insulating blanket
- 8 kg Shirabond, Refrax mortar
- Stainless steel flue kit
How to Build Your Aztec Pizza Oven Kitset

1. Mortar inner edges of base with Refrax Mortar and place on foundation. Tap with rubber mallet to ensure good bond. |
2. Place dome inner on base ensuring all connecting edges have been pre mortared. Tap together, smooth off excess mortar from joins |
3. Mortar in place mantle & fit front arch. Place 'ceramic blanket' sections over inner shell. |

4. Apply refrax mortar to all connecting surfaces of outer shell & place over inner oven. Smooth off joins. |
5. Add chimney section to mantle arch and fit stainless flue. |
Important - To 'season' the oven, start with a small fire inside rear of oven & slowly build heat over a day. This will extract any excess moisture - failure to follow this procedure will result in cracking. |
Applying the Adobe Finish
- Mix cement/sand - 1:4 ratio (make it reasonably wet)
- Splatter over surface - this creates a 'key' for mortar mix later - allow to dry
- Trowel on second coat (drier mix) entirely covering oven, trowel off excess - allow to dry
- A final coat can now be applied, choose a coloured oxide - add to mortar mix 4:1 apply with trowel, dab with thick sponge to achieve desired texture.
